A UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting half the world's mountain gorilla population — one of Africa's most biologically diverse forests and the premier gorilla trekking destination.
June to September and December to February for drier trekking conditions. Gorilla trekking operates year-round — rain is always possible in this equatorial montane forest. Permits are easier to obtain in the wet season (March-May, October-November).
Gorilla permits cost $800 per person (book 3-6 months ahead). Budget lodges near Buhoma from $40-100/night. Mid-range $150-400/night. Luxury lodges (Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, Bwindi Lodge) $500-1,500/night. Batwa cultural experience $80/person. Birding guides $30-50/day.
Charter flights from Entebbe to Kihihi Airstrip (1.5 hours) serve the northern Buhoma sector. Road from Kampala takes 8-10 hours. The southern sectors (Rushaga, Nkuringo) are closer to Kigali, Rwanda (4-5 hours), enabling cross-border itineraries.
